انواع مختلف صفت صفت‌ها کلماتی هستند که کلمات دیگر را توصیف یا تغییر می‌دهند و نوشتن و صحبت کردن شما را بسیار خاص‌تر و بسیار جالب‌تر می‌کنند. کلماتی مانند small, blue, و sharp توصیفی هستند و همگی مصداق صفت هستند. از آنجایی که از صفت‌ها برای شناسایی یا تعیین کمیت افراد و چیزهای منحصر به فرد استفاده می‌شود، معمولاً قبل از اسم یا ضمیری که تغییر می‌دهند قرار می‌گیرند. برخی از جملات دارای صفت‌های متعدد هستند.
در زبان انگلیسی، صفت (Adjective) به کلماتی گفته می‌شود که برای توصیف و صفت‌بندی اسامی و ضمیرها استفاده می‌شوند. این کلمات به شکل مستقیم به معنی جمله اضافه نمی‌شوند، بلکه به کار رفتار یا خصیصه‌ای را که دربارهٔ فاعل، مفعول یا سایر عناصر جمله بیان می‌کنند.
انواع مختلف صفت در زبان انگلیسی عبارتند از:
1- صفت توصیفی (Descriptive Adjective): صفتی که به منظور توصیف یک صفت یا نام استفاده می‌شود؛ مثلاً “A tall man” (مرد قد بلند)
2- صفت مقایسه‌ای (Comparative Adjective): صفتی که برای مقایسه دو چیز با یکدیگر استفاده می‌شود؛ مثلاً “The blue car is faster than the red car” (ماشین آبی سریع‌تر از ماشین قرمز است)
3- صفت تفضیلی (Superlative Adjective): صفتی که برای نشان دادن بالاترین درجهٔ چیزی از بین دو یا چند چیز به کار می‌رود؛ مثلاً “She is the smartest girl in the class” (او با هوش ترین دختر کلاس است)
4- صفت موقعیتی (Demonstrative Adjective): صفتی که برای مشخص کردن چیزی در محل آن به کار می‌رود؛ مثلاً “This book is mine” (این کتاب مال من است)
5- صفت ملکی (Possessive Adjective): صفتی که برای نشان دادن مالکیت یا پرورش خوردگی استفاده می‌شود؛ مثلاً “My car is parked in the garage” (ماشین من در گاراژ پارک شده است)
6- صفت سوالی (Interrogative Adjective): صفتی که برای پرسش در مورد چیزی به کار می‌رود؛ مثلاً “Which book do you want to borrow?” (کدام کتاب را می‌خواهید قرض بگیرید؟)
7- صفت تعدادی (Numeral Adjective): صفتی که برای بیان تعداد چیزها استفاده می‌شود؛ مثلاً “I have three pens” (من سه خودکار دارم)
8- صفت نقش‌آفرین (Predicate Adjective): صفتی که برای توصیف فاعل در جمله به کار می‌رود؛ مثلاً “The cake smells delicious” (کیک بوی خوش‌بویی دارد)
انواع مختلف صفت
صفت کلمه‌ای است که یک اسم را تغییر می‌دهد یا تغییر می‌دهد.
A cat walked past my window
هرکسی که این جمله را می‌خواند احتمالا گربه متفاوتی را به تصویر می‌کشد.
A large orange striped cat walked past my window
اکنون تصویر را در ذهن شما تغییر داده‌ام تا با تصویر من مطابقت داشته باشد.
صفت‌ها به این سؤالات پاسخ می‌دهند که کدام، چه نوع، و چقدر/چند.
Which one: That car has been in a crash
What kind: We have black squirrels in our neighborhood
How much: I ate too much sugar for breakfast
How many: I saw five swans in our pond
انواع مختلف صفت حروف تعریف رایج‌ترین صفت‌ها هستند.
سه مورد از آن‌ها وجود دارد: a، a و an.
Definite article: (شما می‌دانید که در مورد کدام یک صحبت می‌کنید.)
حروف تعریف نامعین: a، an (نمی‌دانید در مورد کدام یک صحبت می‌کنید.)
قبل از کلمه‌ای که با صدای همخوان شروع می‌شود (نه حرف همخوان) از یک استفاده کنید. قبل از کلمه‌ای که با صدای مصوت (نه حرف مصوت) شروع می‌شود، از یک حرف استفاده کنید. An به این دلیل ایجاد شد که گفتن a قبل از کلمه‌ای که با صدای مصوت شروع می‌شود دشوار است. گفتن ساده‌تر است. بنابراین صدای ابتدای کلمه مهم است نه خود حرف.

نکته: بیشتر صفت‌هایی که در این درس با آن‌ها می‌پردازیم، صفت‌های توصیفی هستند. آن‌ها معمولاً قبل از اسم‌هایی که در حال تغییر هستند می‌آیند. سایر صفت‌ها در جمله‌ها ممکن است به عنوان مکمل موضوع (صفت محمول) یا به عنوان مکمل مفعول عمل کنند.
